The Battle of Marathon was fought in 490 BC between Greeks and the Persian Empire. That was the first attempt of Persia under the command of king Darius I to subjugate Greece. The Greek army defeated the Persian army.
The marathon sport comes from this battle because rumors tell that a Greek messenger was sent to give an urgent message, running over 40 km without stopping, he eventually died right after giving the message.
